Phi Kappa Tau's new service initiative—Founders Month of Service—was voted on and approved by the National Council in October 2008. In alignment with the service strategic imperative of the strategic plan, the Fraternity will participate in service events during the month of March to honor its Founders. The initiative will surround Phi Kappa Tau's 103rd Founders Day.

The Fraternity's founders' principles of democracy, integrity, equality and brotherhood are just as important to Phi Kappa Tau today as they were more than 100 years ago. During the Founders Month of Service, brothers can better understand and live these principles when they commit themselves to their communities.

While it is encouraged that brothers get involved with Brother Paul Newman’s legacy—the Hole in the Wall Camps—we welcome any form of service during the Founders Month of Service.

Service Initiative Suggestions

  • Reschedule a previous event dedicated to the Hole in the Wall Camps or other organizations.
  • Contact a local charitable organization and inquire about upcoming events.
  • Talk to your school to learn about upcoming service events.
  • Work in local neighborhoods by offering a spring clean up.
  • Sponsor a table on campus to recognize Hole in the Wall Camp efforts and enlist future interest in volunteering.
  • Contact your local Muscular Distrophy Association to participate in a telethon
  • Participate in St. Baldrick's Day on March 17 (Founders Day!) to raise awareness and funds to cure kids' cancer. Set a price per shaved head and donate the proceeds to a Hole in the Wall Camp.

Outline for Creating a Successful FMOS Event

  • Contact Parker to express interest and commitment.
  • Identify an applicable event that coincides with the mission of the initiative. This can be done by determining if the chapter’s previously scheduled event(s) can be re-worked into this timeframe or selecting additional opportunities.
  • Reconnect with Parker via registration form to communicate the selected service initiative, along with dates, times and any help the chapter needs to plan a successful event.
  • Involve alumni from your chapter or living in your area.
  • Keep Parker informed throughout the planning stages so volunteers and staff can help in any way.
  • Work with local media outlets to maximize exposure for the event and garner more involvement and awareness. Click here for an example press release, and contact Lane with any questions.
  • Enjoy the event. Understand the health, happiness and gratefulness of those individuals this initiative is touching.
  • Report the event’s success to Parker, along with any suggestions and/or best practices for future initiatives.
